Description

It did a very good job of conveying the various facets of war, the experience for those in the trenches, in the hospitals and stranded at home. I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book and what I got from reading it was a unique insight into the way that war can worm it's way into every part of your life. Moving among Ypres, London, and Paris, this emotionally rich and evocative novel is both a powerful exploration of the lasting effects of war on those who fight—and those who don't—and a poignant testament to the power of enduring love.

I was left wondering throughout how all the characters were going to piece their stunted lives back together, whether they even could or wanted to. Mi sento in dovere di scrivere una recensione per questo libro ancora ingiustamente quasi sconosciuto. A young lower class boy, Riley, is introduced to a wealthy family whose young daughter, Nadine, studies art with him in the company of a renowned painter. At eighteen years old, working-class Riley Purefoy and “posh” Nadine Waveney have promised each other the future, but when war erupts across Europe, everything they hold to be true is thrown into question. Hadn't realised that Louisa Young is also the author of LION BOY, so I've just started to read that too.

Days after I read the last page I was still thinking on this novel, I found my mind drifting back to the characters and still turning their stories over in my head. How can the handsome, talented artist Riley Purefoy go back to the life he had before war broke out, especially now he is so badly injured? They are the Romeo and Juliet of the story - star-crossed lovers who are torn apart by circumstances. Working class Riley Purefoy and posh, aristocratic Nadine Waveney meet as children and become friends when Riley’s brains, talent and personality lead him to work in the household of a rich artist.Louisa Young’s historical novel My Dear, I Wanted to Tell You is set in early 20th century England and France.
