The Roland FP-30X has 56 sounds, including a wide range of piano settings, which can be varied using effects. Yamaha’s Smart Pianist app has unlimited registrations, and even Casio’s Music Space lets you save a couple. Featuring Roland’s built-in SuperNATURAL Piano technology, you'll benefit from this piano's naturally rich expression, perfect for playing anything from pianissimo to fortissimo.

For example, you can combine the piano and strings to get a fantastic orchestral and ‘movie’ like playing style. In my opinion, unless you’re just turning it on and only using one or two sounds, this user interface is NOT gonna cut it for performing live, you will definitely need to rely on the app; but . For example, if I wanted to switch between different piano sounds, I’d need to hold down the ‘ Piano’ button, and hit the corresponding key on the piano to choose the voice preset I want. You can enjoy a classic piano feel with authentic touch from Roland’s SuperNATURAL Piano technology and the expressive 88-note PHA-4 Standard Keyboard. While you could argue that this is in part due to the upgraded samples, I still think that these speakers feel better tuned to serve the richer sounds. I’m definitely not a fan, especially on a piano like this that has more than just a small handful of voices.

The main use of the Bluetooth connectivity is communication between the FP-30X hardware and Roland’s Piano Every Day app.

Interestingly, many of the sounds on the FP-30X are updated from the sounds from the original FP-30. For home practice, try the dedicated mode that adjusts the sound for optimum quality when the FP-30X is placed on a desktop, or connect headphones to the twin outputs for silent practice day or night, either solo or alongside your piano teacher.

But they might not even be necessary in many situtaions, thanks to surprisingly powerful and punchy onboard speaker systems that offer increasing performance as you move up the range. So if you’re accustomed to playing acoustic pianos, then this action is going to feel more realistic than a dual sensor action like Yamaha’s GHS action, or Casio’s smart scaled hammer action. Simply register your Roland piano to get unlimited access to hundreds of songs and interactive courses available anytime on your computer, smartphone, or tablet. I won’t pretend that I understand every step that goes into the making of an acoustic piano, but those who want control can find it through the Piano Designer app.

Offering a compact, home-friendly cabinet design, superior dynamic performance and a wide range of creativity-enhancing features to compliment your sound - the new Roland FP30X piano is perfect for players of all abilities. The default velocity curves (controlling the relation of your playing dynamics to overall volume) felt perfect for me, but Roland offers 5 different preset settings if you want to fine-tune the dynamic response to suit your playstyles. Increasing the value seems to increase the size of the emulated space, but also muddies the sound due to the simulated reflections. Now there is the ability to save some SETTINGS as defaults so they are set when you turn the piano on, but this isn’t really a registration (but it is a nice thing to have). For performing at live venues, the speakers might not cut it, and having this option is very much welcome.

So because I have no interest in learning a bunch of key combinations for this review, I will be using the “Roland Piano App” on my iPad to select voices, and make other settings changes in my videos. Roland didn’t make ANY improvements to the user interface, so this is still a big issue with me (but to be totally honest, it might NOT be an issue at ALL for you). I have no interest in downloading the Roland apps as I only wanted a piano I could play without the hassle of the internet! And with its easy-to-transport weight and Bluetooth connectivity for lessons and play-along audio, it’s an ideal choice for any pianist who wants to develop their skills or perform at small events. So anyways, that pretty much rounds out my review on the Roland FP-30X, I hope you found this review to be helpful.
