The grind culture was celebrated as a badge of honour rather than criticised for its patriarchal and elitist nature. It was a fun story arch with an interesting theme throughout that echoes the debate of women empowerment and what is it to be a women, and fuck anyone who disagrees. After reading and completely adoring Insatiable I knew that I had to read Careering as soon as I could get my hands on it. She's safe there, it keeps her busy at all waking hours and leaves her little time to think of much else.

Careering centres itself around the pressures women face in the workplace and in the case of this novel within the media industry, where we face criticism and nuclear burnout to become the idealised ‘successful career woman’ with it all. After devoting the best part of her career to Panache magazine, Harri is gutted when she doesn’t get the Editor role she’s always dreamed of. careering follows 20-something imogen, a struggling intern at a fashion magazine who also runs a successful blog on the side, and 40-something harri, who just got passed up for the role of editor in chief and is now trying to launch a new online feminist magazine. As someone far removed from corporate life in London I didn’t necessarily think I’d relate to this explores the burnout that comes with working tirelessly towards your dream job, sometimes up to the point when it ceases to even be a dream anymore, along with the inherent privilege surrounding the notion of a ‘dream job’. The zeitgeisty read tackles the myth of the girl boss, with feelings of imposter syndrome, burnout and comparison rife throughout.

So perceptive and wise about the media, privilege, the differing but equally troubling pressures that women of all ages face, while still being moving, laugh out loud funny, and inspiring. Careering is a compelling and thoughtful read that every woman (and man) should have on their shelves. I did really enjoy the fist half and the encouraging positive message for women, but I couldn't maintain that interest for the duration of the book.Much like Insatiable, it brushes against some deeper themes, too, including grief and difficult familial relationships.
