I read a lot of contemporary and historical, both adult and YA, and I've also been enjoying more and more fantasy lately. Somehow, she manages to enlist him in helping her land her leading man with their coveted parking space up for grabs if he helps her succeed. I love the genre (quelle surprise) so understood why Liz was so obsessed but I also understood Wes and Liz's stepmom's feelings on the genre. It's Liz's senior year, a time meant to be rife with milestones perfect for any big screen, and she needs Wes's help. Better Than The Movies is a super cute YA contemporary novel and it’s light-hearted, fast to read, and addictive.

A keg party takes place where some characters drink but aren't drunk; the major characters drink very little or nothing (one takes a sip of beer, the other doesn't drink at all).

The annoyingly attractive next-door neighbour might seem like a prime candidate for romantic comedy fantasies, but Wes has only been a pain in Liz's butt since they were kids. If surveyed, everyone on the planet would unanimously agree that the girl was beautiful; it was an indisputable fact. But this is obviously a mother-daughter activity and it would be natural that Liz would feel like she was missing something. From our many less-than-pleasant encounters, I knew the narrowing of his eyes meant he was sizing me up, and that we were about to throw down about the most recent annoyance he’d brought upon me. For a retro one that goes back to the Golden Age of Hollywood, it seems fitting to include To Have and Have Not since the film was borne out of a 10-day fishing trip between director Howard Hawks and author Ernest Hemingway.

Another thing that bothered me was how she kept saying the male MC is the “bad boy”, but honestly he was such a great male character. But by the end of two weeks, before we even got close to official, I almost always got hit with the Ick.Better Than the Movies features quotes from the best-loved rom-coms of cinema and takes you on a rollercoaster of romance that isn't movie-perfect but jaw-dropping and heart-stopping in unexpected ways. Synopsis (from Goodreads): Liz Buxbaum has always known that Wes Bennett was not boyfriend material. The story is everything you expect from a romance novel but it has so much heart to it and you just fall in love with Liz and Wes. In grade school, Wes was the guy who’d put a frog in my Barbie DreamHouse and a decapitated lawn gnome’s severed head in my homemade Little Free Library.
