The story is almost a coming of age story, with our main character having been repressed by a partner who didn't appreciate or nurture him in the way he deserved. Oskar is a 33 year old gay man from Poland, but you could easily change his name and where he says he's from and absolutely nothing about his character would be different. I also just didn’t want to let the characters go so I was in a major predicament of either binging it or spending more time with these icons?

I really love Matt Cain (The Madonna of Bolton made me cry buckets of happy tears) and I was hugely looking forward to this.Sometimes good people do bad things and sometimes we have to decide whether what they've done is a dealbreaker or worthy of forgiveness. He doesn't feel Polish, he doesn't feel like an immigrant, he just doesn't feel developed enough full stop.

I was a huge fan of Matt Cain’s book, The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle, and could not wait to read his latest creation. Although the book is named after Ted, and Ted is our main character, we are introduced to a rich cast of side characters who each have their own lives, histories, and ways of viewing the world.It’s a journey the author makes us want to accompany Ted on as he battles with the low self-esteem resulting from being dumped, quite out of the blue, by Giles, his partner of twenty years, and the responsibility he feels towards his parents to be part of the family business, famous for its ice cream. He masterfully interlaces some dark themes in this novel around prejudice, control and betrayal, among many others, however, they are balanced accordingly with friendship and warmth. You can be the ripest peach on the tree, yet there will still be some people who don't like peaches.
